Katlyn Keller

Do I really need a master’s degree? Is the School of Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS) the right place for me? What are some the benefits of getting an advance degree?

These are all questions that prospective students ask us. We recently sat down with recent graduate, Katyln Keller, and here’s what she had to say:

I truly believe my master’s degree from CAPS will help propel me into the next stage of my career when I’m ready to make that jump.”

Why did you choose CAPS (formerly University College) at WashU?

I really enjoyed speaking with CAPS advisors and professors that I met while investigating which program to pursue. I also met with advisors at three different schools, but CAPS just seemed like the right fit for me—mostly because of the flexible schedule that’s offered. Other schools I visited had set schedules during the week. At CAPS, I took classes on Saturdays. I even took a three-week intensive course one summer. It was incredibly flexible, and the professors are very willing to work with you. I had a family emergency and was out for a week. And it wasn’t a problem. When you can’t make every single class, other schools penalized you for being an adult professional.

Did you have any worries when deciding on a school or program?

Some of my concerns were obviously financial. School isn’t cheap, but CAPS is incredibly competitive in comparison to all of the other local programs. In addition to that, I am attempting to further my career with this degree and didn’t want to hinder my current job with the addition of school. However, my professors were very willing to work with my timeline. For example, March is a very busy month for me at work. I was able to relay to professors that I might need an extension, and they were very accommodating. So the time management and the financial worry were very big concerns for me from the beginning, but both of these ended up working out with CAPS.
