Summer Writers Institute: Tuition, Admissions and College Credit Option

Applications: Deadline extended: You can still apply! Young Writers Institute applicants must submit a Young Writers Institute application and $15 application fee, a writing sample, and a teacher's recommendation. Regular applications for the Summer Writers Institute must include a writing sample in the genre you want to work in that totals 20-25 pages of prose, or, if you are a poet, 10 poems, and a $15 application fee. Your sample should be work in progress (not published) in the genre of the workshop you are applying for. The submitted writing sample will be discussed by your workshop group the first week of the Institute. Questions? Telephone (314) 935-6759. Apply now! Seats in each workshop are still available.

Tuition: Tuition for 2008 is $795 for the noncredit option and $1595 for the 3-credit option, described below.

College Credit Option: Requirements for Receiving Academic Credit for the Summer Writers Institute

1. Do substantial revisions of your work.

2. Do some additional reading and write a critical or reflective essay on what you have read. (This reading and writing will be determined by the needs and interests of the students within the context of the workshop; we ask instructors to work with students to suggest possible readings that might help the writer improve and grow.)

3. Keep a daily journal about your experiences at the Institute. Details about revision and the essay will be determined with the instructor. The instructor will review all of this material and assign a grade based on the workshop and this additional work. The additional work is not due until the end of the summer session; that way, students will have time to revise and write.

These three credits may be applied toward the Bachelor of Science in English degree or the 15-credit Certificate in Creative Writing offered by Washington University's University College in Arts and Sciences.
