Admissions

Washington University's Summer School has an open admission policy and welcomes students from other colleges and universities, adults who are seeking career advancement or enrichment, and qualified high school students. A transcript is not required for students who have earned a high school diploma, or its equivalent, by June. However, all students are expected to have completed the stated course prerequisites. Visiting students are strongly encouraged to consult with their home institution advisor prior to registering. International visiting students should also contact the Office of International Students and Scholars at (314) 935-5910 for assistance with visa documents, orientation, and personal and cross-cultural counseling. High School students should call (314) 935-4807 for information about our residential and non-residential high school student programs.

Credit Load

The Summer School is challenging because of compressed time schedules for courses usually offered over a full semester. Therefore, we recommend that students carry no more than the maximum credit load, for each session, indicated below:

Session 1: Maximum of 4 units
Session 2: Maximum of 7 units
Session 3: Maximum of 7 units
Session 4: Maximum of 7 units

For any registration exceeding the maximum units, students will need special permission. Call (314) 935-4806 or (314) 935-6720 to make an appointment with the Director of the Summer School.

Grade Options

Students may choose among three grading options during the summer session:

  • Letter Grade - yields GPA
  • Pass/Fail - no GPA
  • Audit

Students may choose the audit grade option if they do not seek academic credit for the course and do not wish to be responsible for all assignments. Students may not change their grade option after a certain date in each session. Refer to the Registration and Refund Deadlines section above for more information.

Independent Study

All independent study projects must be described and approved in writing by the independent study instructor and an academic advisor, and are subject to approval by the Summer School Director and Registrar. Click here to obtain the Independent Study form. For more information, please call (314) 935-6749.

Course Time/Location Changes and Cancellations

Occasionally, it is necessary to change the time or location of a course or to cancel a course. Changes will be posted online and in the event of cancellation, students will be notified by email. The Summer School establishes minimum enrollments and may cancel classes that do not meet this minimum. Please attend the first day of class unless you are notified that a course has been canceled. Tuition and fees are refunded in the event of a canceled course.
