Spend the Summer Under Our Arches!
The Summer School at Washington University has four sessions and a rich assortment of courses. Fundamental courses fulfill degree requirements, and smaller-sized classes for more focused and concentrated learning. If you usually have a busy schedule of work or academics but have some room in your summer, from tap dancing to statistics the Summer School has something for everyone. Summer courses are held in the daytime (these courses are designated "L") and also in the evenings (courses designated "U"). Special campus events include free movies and Thursday night live jazz.
Just beginning your college experience? The Summer School at Washington University has a wealth of courses to help jumpstart your studies. If you are still in high school and live in the St. Louis area, you may apply to take introductory college courses and earn college credits through the High School College Credit Program.

SUMMER ON CAMPUS
From Brookings Hall to Francis Field House, Washington University in St. Louis offers a wonderful variety of sheltering arches—cool nooks to explore, quiet sites for reverie, gateways to learning. Just a short ride from the Washington University campus is another famous arch—the Gateway Arch. Designed by the late architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, the Arch symbolizes St. Louis’ role as Gateway to the West. For many it also serves as the gateway to our wonderful city.
SUMMER IN ST. LOUIS
Summer is one of the best times to
experience St. Louis. On campus, enjoy free movies at our Wednesday night film festival. Enjoy
concerts by the renowned St. Louis Symphony Orchestra or catch a Cardinals game
downtown. There
are art fairs and house tours in beautiful turn-of-the-century
neighborhoods. Fair St. Louis on
the Mississippi Riverfront is the country's largest Fourth of July celebration,
and during May and June the Opera Theatre of St. Louis offers electrifying
programs.
Fine as well as affordable dining is plentiful in the nearby Central
West End; in "The Loop," a shopping and entertainment area just north of campus; on "The
Hill," St. Louis's Italian neighborhood; or on South Grand Avenue, which has an array of international shops and restaurants. Entertainment and nightlife are close by at Laclede's Landing
along the river. Across the street from the University, in Forest Park, are golf courses, tennis courts, an art museum, and a world-famous
zoo; a seven-mile walking/running/biking trail circles the park. The Missouri Historical Society, the Science
Center, and the Missouri
Botanical Garden all contain
outstanding exhibits and research opportunities. Nature lovers can bike and
hike on the Katy Trail
or take a lazy weekend float trip down one of Missouri's
crystal-clear wilderness rivers.
