Tuition Refunds
A student who officially withdraws within the refund period will
receive a tuition refund in accordance with the refund schedule.
All refunds are calculated from the date on which the student completes
a course change online. A refund will be applied to the student's
credit card if the original payment was made by credit card. Otherwise,
a check will be generated for the refund amount. For more information about tuition and other fee refunds, click http://ucollege.wustl.edu/about/refund.
Approvals: If you are a Washington University student in a school other than the College of Arts & Sciences, please be sure your selected courses meet with the approval of your dean or advisor. Several courses during the summer may require other permissions. Students should obtain all approvals and supporting signatures prior to registering for courses.
Credit Load: The Summer School is challenging because of
compressed time schedules for courses usually offered over a full
semester. Therefore, we recommend that students carry the maximum
credit load, for each session, indicated below:
Session 1: Maximum of 3 units
Session 2: Maximum of 7 units
Session 3: Maximum of 7 units
Session 4: Maximum of 7 units
Students should not take more than 10 units of credit during any single
session. For any registration exceeding 10 units, call (314) 935-4806
or (314) 935-6720 to make an appointment with the Director of the
Summer School.
Grade Options: Students may choose among three grading options:
Letter Grade, Pass/Fail, or Audit. Students choosing
the Pass/Fail option must designate the option at the time of
registration. Students may not change to or from the Pass/Fail option
after a certain date in each session. Please refer to the Important
Dates and Deadlines grid at the top of this web page for specific
deadlines. Students may choose the audit grade option if they do not
seek academic credit for the course and do not wish to be responsible
for all assignments (although Special Audit is not available during the Summer).
Independent Study: Students may arrange independent study with
faculty members. All independent study projects must be described and
approved in writing by the independent study instructor and an academic
advisor, and are subject to approval by the Summer School Director and
Registrar. We do not make verbal arrangements. Registration deadlines
for Independent Study vary. Contact University College for registration
and deadlines. The tuition varies depending on the students program of
study. Students who are not enrolled in a day or evening program CANNOT
register for summer internships and independent studies.
Cancellations: Occasionally, it is necessary to change the time
or location of a course, or to cancel a course. Changes will be posted
online and in the University College office, January Hall, Room 20, and
in the event of cancellation, students will be notified by email. The Summer
School establishes minimum enrollments and may cancel classes that do
not meet this minimum. Please attend the first day of class. Courses
that do not meet minimum enrollment are canceled only after the first
class meeting and in consultation with the Summer School office.
Tuition and fees are refunded in the event of a canceled course.
Students who are enrolled in a course that is canceled and who do not
wish to re-enroll in another course MUST contact the Summer School
office at (314) 935-6720, so that a refund can be issued. Students with
questions about the refund policy should contact the University College
Financial Manager, January Hall, Room 100, (314) 935-6701.
Visiting Students: If you are a degree candidate at another institution, you need not submit a transcript of previous course work. However, you are expected to have completed the stated prerequisites for a course. We strongly encourage you to consult with your home institution's advisor for approval of course work that you plan to take at Washington University and transfer to your home institution. Remember that most institutions require traditional ABC grades for transfer credit.
International Students: The Office for International Students and Scholars will be of great service to you if you are visiting from another country. It issues certificates of eligibility (visa documents) to undergraduate and graduate students, conducts orientation for new students, offers English language programs and courses, and provides personal and cross-cultural counseling. The office is in Stix International House at 6470 Forsyth Boulevard, opposite Mallinckrodt Student Center. Please e-mail questions to stix@aismail.wustl.edu, or call (314) 935-5910.
High School Students: Washington University offers both residential and nonresidential programs for high school students. If you are entering your senior year in the coming fall, you may be eligible to earn academic credit while experiencing college life in the more relaxed atmosphere of the summer months. (See High School Summer Scholars Program.) St. Louis-area high school students may also be eligible to take college courses throughout the academic year through the High School College Credit Program. If you have questions about these programs, please call (314) 935-6759.
