The MLA Saturday Seminar series is sponsored by the Master of Liberal Arts program and University College. The lectures by Washington University faculty, offered annually every Saturday in February, are free of charge to the public and no registration is required.

MLA Saturday Lectures, Spring 2008 —Elections and Politics

For the coming election year, we have gathered experts from several areas—Law, History, Political Science, and American Culture Studies—to help us examine the many dimensions of political and electoral choice in American democracy: presidential and congressional, past and present. Come hear them, and cast the most informed votes you’ll ever cast!

February 2: Faith, Hope, and Fear: The American Presidency in the 21st Century Wayne Fields, the Lynne Cooper Harvey Distinguished Professor of English and Director of the American Culture Studies Program

February 9: Race, Politics, and the American Voter Margaret Garb, Assistant Professor of History and Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies

February 16: Congress After the 2008 Elections Steven S. Smith, the Kate M. Gregg Professor of Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science and Director of the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government, and Public Policy.

February 23: The Politics of Reproductive Rights and Motherhood Susan Frelich Appleton, the Lemma Barkeloo & Phoebe Couzins Professor of Law, Washington University School of Law.
