The Transfer Process: Four Easy Steps

Step One: Explore our web site to learn about our degree programs, courses, and student services.

Step Two: Call (314) 935-6777 (or TOLL FREE 1-866-340-0723) to schedule an appointment with an academic adviser. Bring a printout of your academic record for a quick and free evaluation of the college credits you have already earned.

Step Three: Talk with your academic advisor about your educational goals. If your interests are a good match for our programs, you can go ahead and--

Step Four: Complete an Admissions Application, request official transcripts from each college or university you've attended, and write a one-page essay about your educational goals. Bring or mail this material to University College. The mailing address is: University College, Campus Box 1085, Washington University, St. Louis, MO 63130.

Transferring Your College Credits

University College has a generous transfer credit policy for course work completed at other accredited institutions.

  • Up to 66 units may be transferred from a junior or community college
  • Maximum of 84 units may be transferred for the Bachelor's degree
  • Schedule an appointment with an advisor for a transfer credit evaluation, (314) 935-6777.
  • Transfer credit will not be given for grades below C- nor will it be given for internships and independent studies.

General Education Requirements

English*: Undergraduate degree candidates in University College must complete a basic and advanced writing requirement. The 6-unit Basic Writing Requirement consists of Principles of Writing (U11 101) and Critical and Researched Writing (U11 203). The 3-unit Advanced Writing Requirement must be fulfilled by any 300-level or higher English Composition course. U11 203 and the 300-level-or-higher composition course are required of all undergraduate degree candidates, and these courses must be taken at Washington University.
*A student who transfers English Composition courses from another college or university must consult an academic advisor in University College, who will determine what courses will be taken at Washington University.

Humanities: (9 credits) Courses from Classics, History*, Literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies.

Social Sciences: (9 credits) Courses from: Anthropology, Economics, History*, Political Science, Psychology, Social Thought and Analysis.
*History courses may satisfy either the Humanities or Social Sciences requirements, but not both.

Math and Science: (9 credits) Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Physics, and Science. To meet the quantitative reasoning requirement you must take one of the following: Econ 231 (Economic Statistics), Math 1011 (Intro to Statistics), Math 123 (Programming in C), Math 141 (Pre-Calculus I), Math 142 (Pre-Calculus II), Math 155 (Calculus I), Math 156 (Calculus II), Math 205 (Applied Statistics Online), Math 210 (The Art of Mathematical Thinking), Math 212 (Sports and Statistics), Math 255 (Calculus III), Math 256 (Calculus IV), any 300 level and higher math classes, PolSci 323 (Introduction to Quantitative Methods) or Psych 300 (Psychological Statistics).

Foreign Language and/or Creative Arts: (9 credits) Art, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Film Studies, Music, Speech and Foreign Languages.

ADVANCED COURSES

All majors must complete a minimum of 30 credit units of advanced (300-400 level) courses. At least 18 advanced credit units must be taken in the major, although some departments specify more.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT


Students working toward the Bachelor of Science degree at Washington University must complete the final 36 units of course work at Washington University. At least half of the credits for the major and at least 18 credit units of advanced (300-400 level) courses must be completed at Washington University.

ADDITIONAL ELECTIVE COURSES


Students must complete a total of 120 credit units of course work for the degree by taking additional courses in either the liberal arts or professional areas. No more than 10 percent of a student's course work may be in independent work (including internships, directed readings), and no more than 60 units in one department may count toward the degree.

St. Louis Community College Transfer Credits

St. Louis Community College Transfer Credits The following St. Louis Community College (STLCC) courses will transfer to University College for the Bachelor of Science degree. Students should consult with a University College adviser; this listing is subject to change. Unless a specific course number is noted, credits for all courses in that subject will transfer.

Writing: (6 credits) U11-101 (Principles of Writing); U11-203 (Critical and Researched Writing).
  • Credit is given for English ENG 101 (College Comp 1), and students may receive elective credit for a second-level writing course if the grade is "B" or higher.
  • A student who transfers English Composition courses from another college or university must consult an academic advisor in University College.
Humanities: (9 credits) Selected courses from Classics, History*, Literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies
  • Credit is given for ART 100-104; History; Humanities; ENG 201-222, 226, 227, 228, 230-32); Philosophy
Social Sciences: (9 credits) Selected courses from: Anthropology, Economics, History*, Political Science, Psychology, Social Thought and Analysis
  • Credit is given for Anthropology; Economics 103, 140, 151, 152, 200, 215; Geography; History*, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology.
*History courses may satisfy either the Humanities or Social Sciences requirements, but not both.

Math/Science (9 credits): Selected courses from Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Planetary Sciences, Mathematics, Physics
  • Credit is given for Biology 111-217; 218, 219, 220, 222, 223; Business 210, 212; Chemistry 105, 106, 201, 202, 204, 205, 206, 207, 210, 211; Geography 103; Geology; Mathematics 185, 186, 210, 212, 215, 220, 230, 240; Physical Sciences 105-115, 123, 124.
Foreign Language and/or Creative Arts: (9 credits) Selected courses from Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Foreign Languages
  • Credit is given for Art, Arabic, Chinese; COM 101, 107; French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish; Music; Theater.
Unless a specific course number is noted, credits for all courses in that subject will transfer.

THE COLLEGE-LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) was founded by the College Boards and the Carnegie Corporation in 1967 to help adult students begin or continue their educations. The program tests people on knowledge acquired in a variety of ways: in school, at work, in the military, or through reading and personal experience. University College accepts CLEP credits toward the Associate in Arts degree or Bachelor of Science degree. For specific information, contact University College at (314) 935-6700.

University College will grant credit to students for successful completion of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests under the following conditions:

  • 1. CLEP credit applies only to students admitted to an Associate in Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in University College. A maximum of 30 units (credits) (maximum 24 units can be applied to an A.A. degree) can be earned through CLEP testing. Test credit cannot be used for residency purposes.
  • 2. The minimum credit-granting score for CLEP tests is a "50," which represents a letter grade of "C." A maximum of three (3) units credit may be earned per examination.
  • 3. CLEP credit will not be allowed when a student has received credit for a more advanced or comparable course in the subject. For example, credit will not be allowed for the College Algebra examination if the individual is currently enrolled in, or has ever completed Algebra or a more advanced math course.
  • 4. CLEP credit may be awarded for examinations taken prior to admission in University College, but those scores will not be reviewed until students have been admitted to an associates or bachelor's degree in University College. Students who wish to have previous CLEP test scores evaluated for credit in University College, or students who are preparing to take the CLEP test must complete the Request to Determine Eligibility Form.
  • 5. The CLEP tests must be taken and scores received by University College prior to the beginning of the student's final semester. Credit will not be granted for tests taken during the student's final semester in University College.
Determination of credit for any CLEP test cannot be made until the has been reviewed.
