University College Overview
University College is the evening and special-programs division of the College of Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. Part-time, evening, and summer-school students of all ages in the St. Louis area may attend Washington University through University College. Students can earn bachelor's or master's degrees, or associates' degrees, or certificates, or take courses just for personal enrichment.
What Does It Cost?
University College offers a special reduced evening tuition. For current rates (per credit unit), click here. Students over 60 pay half-tuition for most classes. Students enrolled in designated non-credit Special Audit courses pay $350 per course; graduate-level Special Audit courses are $550. Other fees may include the Late Registration Fee: $30+; Late Payment Fee, 5 percent of tuition costs; and the Evening Student Parking Permit. Regarding this permit, contact the Washington University Transportation Department, phone (314) 935-5601. It costs $35 to apply for admission to a University College degree or certificate program.

Who May Take Courses in University College?
If you have a high school diploma or the equivalent, you may enroll in most University College courses. Some courses are open only to graduate students, and others are open only to students admitted to a particular degree program. Whatever courses you choose, you should observe the specific prerequisites of each course. Qualified high school seniors may apply to take courses through the College Credit Program for High School Students.

How Do I Register to Take a Course?
If you wish to take University College courses without seeking a degree, formal admission is not required. You may register online by going to our home page and using the "Register" button, or in person at the University College office, January Hall, Room 20, on the Washington University Hilltop Campus. Click here for step-by-step instructions for online registration. Payment for on-line registration must be made at our secure site by electronic check (using your regular check and checking account) or credit card (Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or American Express). Payment options for in-person registrations include: cash, check, or credit card.

Is a Degree from University College the Same as a Degree from Washington University?

How Do I Enroll in a Degree or Certificate Program?
Call 314/935-6777, or 1-866-340-0723 (toll free) or e-mail University College at ucollege@artsci.wustl.edu to receive application materials. Then make an appointment with a University College academic advisor. He or she will arrange for an evaluation of previous college work to determine transfer credit. Be sure to complete the necessary application forms at least one month prior to the start of the semester. If you wish to take one or two courses without seeking a degree, formal admission is not required.
Who Teaches the Courses?
University College's instructors include full-time Washington University faculty; successful business, science and health professionals; working journalists, writers, and performing artists; and advanced Washington University graduate students and recent Ph.D.s. In appointing faculty, University College takes into account not only professional and academic accomplishments, but teaching talent and teaching experience. University College is therefore able to offer high-quality instruction in over 40 fields of study. Student evaluations of courses recently taught are on file at the University College office and are available to prospective students.
When and How Often Do Classes Meet?
Most University College courses meet once a week, for two and one-half hours, in the evenings or late afternoons, or on Saturdays during the day.
Are the Courses Really Hard?
Washington University assumes that its students sincerely want to learn. So the courses are challenging and substantial, and they make you think, but they are not extremely or unusually difficult. University College instructors, advisors, and staff are well known for going the extra mile to help individual students who might be struggling.
