Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management

The Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management program is designed for working professionals currently employed in the nonprofit sector and also those who want to enter the field. The program provides a range of courses addressing the major responsibilities and challenges of nonprofit and human resources management, preparing students to work effectively in the field and to enhance the management skills of those seeking a career in related fields. Administered jointly by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and University College, the program is designed for working adults attending school on a part-time basis.

Completion of the 15-credit Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management applies to the Master's degree in Nonprofit Management, for those wishing to continue.

Admission

  • Applicants must submit the following:
  • A completed Application for Graduate Admission form, including an essay of 300-400 words describing their interest in and qualifications for the program;
  • A nonrefundable $35 application fee;
  • Official transcripts of all previous college work (undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate);
  • Three academic or professional letters of recommendation;
  • A personal interview is recommended.

Admission Deadlines: July 15 for Fall; October 15 for Spring; March 15 for Summer. University College and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences review completed applications and make admissions decisions on a rolling basis. Qualified students may take up to six units on a non-degree basis. To do so, fill out and submit this Graduate Unclassified Study Program Application. A maximum of 6 credits of related and comparable  graduate-level course work may be transferred from another university or from a related graduate program at Washington University with the approval of the program director. These must be graduate-level units not used to fulfill undergraduate degree requirements. Transfer credit may be granted only for authorized courses for which the student received a grade of B or higher.

Degree Requirements

The Master's Degree in Nonprofit Management consists of 36 credit units of graduate course work in a combination of non-profit management and human resources management courses, of which 25 credit units are required courses:

  • U76-NPM 421 History and Development of NP Sector
  • U76-NPM 425 Financial Management
  • U76-NPM 506 21st-Century Perspectives OR NPM 531, Human Resources Management
  • U76-NPM 510 Research Methods in Human Resources
  • U76-NPM 514 Capstone Course
  • U76-NPM 520 Organizational Behavior and Administration
  • U76-NPM 540 Managerial Economics
  • The remainder of courses (11 credits total) are nonprofit-related electives of the student's choice.

    • The Nonprofit Master's Program does not require a final examination or research project. However, maintenance of a grade point average of 3.0 or higher is required.
