Bachelor of Science in Political Science

A political science major a offers you the opportunity to study political life as part of a broad liberal education. It is a useful step toward law or business school. Other political science students pursue careers or further education in public administration, urban planning, journalism, education, and social work, or in federal, state, or local government.

Requirements for the Major

All University College undergraduate students must satisfy the same general-education requirements; for information on those, click here. To major in political science you must complete a minimum of 30 credit units of political science course work, including at least 6 units of introductory course work, a 300-level course on research methods, and at least 18 units at the 300- and 400- levels. The 18 advanced units for the major must include at least one 3-unit course from three of the following five fields:

  • American politics
  • Comparative politics
  • International politics
  • Political and social theory
  • Methods of political research and analysis
